isabelle monod (fr): fragile colours
wouter bolangier (b): in situ4
this time, 't eksternest is presenting just 2 glass artists:
one from southern france and a flemish artist from erpe-mere.
although they do not know each other, they have the same approach to glass.
they see it as an art form whereby the fragility, transparency and breakable
quality of glass is used together with other materials to create a total art
work.
in isabelle monod's work, glass is the most important material, to which elements from the environment are added.
wouter bolangier's works are created again in situ.
the whole eksternest site is at his disposal to create an overarching, large scale installation
on a theme inspired by the various indoor and outdoor spaces, the relation
between life and cosmos and the relation between sexes. he calls it
"in situ squared".
we're curious to see what he will come up with!
some sentences:
1. isabelle monod:
architectural accumulations juggle with space, allowing the observer free
to dream of past worlds, but with an eye to the future. they reflect a
monumental classicism, which is a common characteristic of the ineluctable
quality of a work of art.
the juxtaposition of smooth transparency with roughness brings balance to
imbalance, linking together glass with rough objects from its environment.
these experiments lead his work in a new direction, in which his great
sensitivity melds the ephemeral with a fixed stability fossilised for
eternity, liberating the pure creativity of his soul.

2. wouter bolangier:
glass is the material which fits my subject matter the best.
in my work I deal with themes like life, transience, relationships and
religion.
I can express these best in glass.
for me, the fragility and transparency of the material make it the most
appropriate medium to express these thoughts.
working with glass is always a challenge.
it is a difficult material that does not always do what you want it to.
This adds a pleasurable element of suspense to exploring the possibilities
of the medium without searching obsessively for technical solutions.
